iGaging digital calipers - experiences?
« on: September 27, 2020, 11:22:03 am »
Does anyone have any recent experience of these digital calipers? I've seen a couple of very positive reviews from 3 or 4 years ago, that suggest that they're decent competition for the Mitutoyos at a lower price, but I've also seen more recent comments indicating that the quality has gone downhill recently.

Anyone got any useful feedback?

We have a few of those digital calipers at work from different brands (nothing big name branded) and they are awful and annoying to use. Constantly flat batteries and inconsistent measurements. Stiff to move, razor sharp edges that cut fingers, sometimes the slide mechanism is getting slightly "stuck", etc.

Personally, I prefer good old vernier calipers. But they must be the old type, with very precise ground surfaces, not the newfangled cheap ones.

And even though I prefer mechanical ones with the vernier,  for occasional lathe work, I prefer the digital ones, as they are faster to get an idea where you are. For final precise measurements I use a micrometer then.

I will add that I had the iGaging angle caliper with digital readout. The display is awful it is nearly impossible to read due to the lack of contrast of the digits. I threw it out (which I never usually do) and got another brand.
The LCD display that is so bad might be used on their other products, not sure.. but I am staying away from them now.

I have 6" iGaging calipers and I'm very happy with them. I have not used higher priced brands, but I can't imagine them being much better.

They are perfectly smooth in operation, nothing rattles or gets stuck. They do return to 0 and don't lose count no matter what you do.

They are orders of magnitude better than the $15 cheapos. If you compare to that stuff, then don't think twice, iGaging is just better for not that much of a price increase.

I also have been using the 6" iGaging absolute origin calipers for a few years.

They are much better quality then the usual cheap imports. Holding up quite well.

I especially like that the iGaging uses CR2032 batteries that seem to last forever.

I have a 6" with the large display. I find it works well, accurate and repeatable when compare to my mic and mic gauges. I give it good to +- 0.0005 for 3" of less, maybe better but I have know way of telling. However it isn't the smoothest in operation and the battery holder sucks,  popping up, losing connection,

I have a 12" and 24" igaging calipers. For the price, they are fine. i couldn't afford a 24" vernier ($ $ $) or even quality digital ($ $).

You are probably looking at 4" or 6". Why waste your time and breath? Get a good brand. I have a mitutoyo 6" that I swear by. I have a plastic vernier that I use for spot measurements. It gets a lot of abuse but I don't have to worry about handling it properly. It probably gets 5x the use of the mitutoyo.

Amazon says I did buy a 6" igaging, as recently as 2016. However, it's not in my drawer. I can only assume I threw it out.

Just look at the amazon reviews, they are all over the board. vs 5 star with 1500 reviews for mitutoyo. How many products with 1500 reviews can get 5 stars? Even at it's price point, the value is there for the mitutoyo.

I have two models and both are good. One with the larger digits display, and one OriginCal, standard small size display. You'll have to post the specific model you are looking at for relevant comments. iGaging does make some cheap crap.

CR2032 > SR44 for sure.

Mitutoyo mentioned above: https://www.amazon.com/Mitutoyo-500-196-30-Advanced-Measuring-Resolution/dp/B00IG46NL2/

edit: OP has already ordered in the other thread already https://www.eevblog.com/forum/reviews/caliper-withwithout-fine-adjustment/
