Hello all

I’m repairing a HP5335A does anyone have a good copy of the manual. It can be downloaded from the HP Agilent website but the power supply section is very badly scanned and it’s not readable. Would be real helpful if anyone has those two pages in the manual.

I am working my way through it, but looks like lots of bad capacitor, have taken out all the supply rails. 5 15 -15  and likely all the others.  All killed the various regulator and pass transistors.

My other question is I’m confused by the number system used on some of the components. For example the -15 volt regulator is a 1826-0214 as opposed to an lm320T-15 etc.  I found no info on the part number but I could find similar number systems on a HP parts list reference, not my actual part but looked very  similar.  I’m pretty sure it’s a jelly been regulator with a Motorola stamp but what’s with the part number.

The 5 volt rail also has NPN pass transistor with the number 4-611.  I think it’s gone pop as my transistors analyser just say no components found. I have found a few of the part listed on eBay but no data sheet. Is there a key or some way of looking up the generic part number. Many of the parts in this counter have similar numbers for jelly bean parts. Was this done so parts  had to be bought via HP etc?

Interesting to know about the parts number system and any help with service data appreciated. I’m looking for the equivalent to the 4-611 npn pass transistors

   The 1826 is HP's "class" for linear voltage regulators. The "4-611" is probably their short hand for PN 1824-0611.    Have you searched the internet for a cross reference for those part numbers?   Probably the most useful cross reference that I've found is hosted by Speer in Canada.  <http://www.sphere.bc.ca/test/hp-parts/hpparts2.html>.

  OH, here you go. Speer says that the 1826-0214 is a 7915 -15 VDC regulator.  <http://www.sphere.bc.ca/test/hp-parts/300-hpxref.pdf>

The "4-611" is probably their short hand for PN 1824-0611.

Transistors are 1854 prefix, so it would be 1854-0611.

Thanks for the information on the reference I did find a HP document but not the sphere link so thanks very much for that. But why do they have the prefix number code as opposed to the normal letter number code such as BC108 etc ? 

How did you know to put 1824 in front of the transistors number is this a HP thing ?

Was it to control spares ?

Thanks for the manual link I will purchase that if nobody on the forum has the page scanned for me.   I’m only looking for just one page which is the power supply section. I’m a bit cheap so generally try to avoid paying it’s a Yorkshire principal.

You can get a hi-res scan of the 5335A manual free from the ko4bb.com website, link below. Enter "5335A" in the search box.

The file you're looking for is the 52MB one.

Inside the document, from the A1 power supply schematic, you'll find that the pass transistor on the +5V rail is designated as A1Q1 because it is on the A1 power board. From the replaceable part page(also inside the above manual document), it gives a clear description of the part under A1Q1 as "Transistor PNP SI DARL TO-220AB PD=2W", its HP reference as 1853-0454 and real world part number TIP106.

But, there is something odd here. If you refer to the schematic, that transistor should be a NPN DARL type instead for it to work correctly. So you have a hard choice. Either you believe what the manual said or go with your instinct.

Actual that does really help thanks for the information. 

Yes i see what you mean about Q1 but the part number is also wrong as printed on the device is 4-611 not 0454 and its T0-3 package not at TO220. Well I need to have a better look tonight on the bench now i have the schematic makes all the difference. Im guessing Q1 should be a npn darlingtion pass transtristor not PNP

Ok spotted the issue. There are two Transistors on the schematic labelled Q1. However the 5 volt npn transistors is mounted on flying leads on the back panel. This Q1 must be referenced somewhere else in the manual. I think it is a 2N6055  8 amp power darlintion


  The pnp package listed on the schematic page is the -5v pass transistors.

So all good.

You're absolutely right. It is a 2N6055. I found it listed under the "Misc Chassis Electrical Parts" section.

Thanks for all the help. Have a 6055 transistor on order from digikey and a -15 volt regulator from RS Components. Anyway bodged in a couple of bench power supplies and let a few tantalum destroy themselves and have a display and some function working so moving in the right  direction

Again you have been a great help. Always amazing when people to take time out to help others. I try to return the favour when I can.
