Name That Plug - 12V - Similar to AU/NZ mains plug (2 pin)
« on: January 09, 2019, 11:34:50 pm »
Hi,

On a Petrol Generator I have, it has a 12VDC output.
The plug is 2 pin, much like a 2 pin AU/NZ mains AC plug, but they are closer together.

Does anyone know what this plug is called, assuming it has an official name, and where you can get a plug to plug into it?
Currently I am just using male spade terminals on wires, but ideally looking for a proper plug for it.

Thanks

I would call that scary  :scared: Dam plug won't fit lets get out the pliers and bend the pins a bit to make it fit .....

If memory serves there was a bit of a stink here and our local electrical safety mob banned generators being sold with them. If it is your generator replace the socket with something safer.

I was thinking the same thing exactly and wondered who would have come up with this type of plug, being so similar to mains. Dangerous as you say.

I might do that and just change the socket if I can find something else that will fit nicely.

Would still love to find out what this type of plug is called though :)

This seems to be the type of cable that comes with newer generators these days for the DC side, Honda specifically, maybe others.

Many years ago, Honda imported a model of generator that from the factory had a similar plug, but Honda Australia said it wasn’t safe, so they got a new outlet fitted.

Someone grey imported a whole heap of them with the original outlets and Honda got into a lot of trouble even though they did the right thing.

Most cheap Chinese bunnings quality generators have similar connectors, however as with the advice above, I would be changing the outlet for a different style.

I was in masters when they still were a business and one of their generators had the same style plug, but the plastic holding the pins was so soft that it fitted into the 240v gpo without too much force.

I’m also assuming you know that the 12v output is normally unregulated and ripply as shit. It’s there as an emergency battery charger only. Even the new Honda’s are the same, still pretty much off a coil on the stator and rectified.

My 6kVa Chinese Honda clone has the same one with the right angle T.

There is a reasonable quality 20amp barrel system (Hella or Narva) that should fit in your space that is fairly common in automotive circles with rubber dust caps etc. If you go down that path getting extra plugs if needed would be more widely available. I have a couple fitted into a trailer for running a pair of three way fridges that I changed from cigarette types.

That connector is used on Yamaha generators.

Not on any of the Yamaha generators I’ve sold that were imported into Australia through the correct channels.

Internationally where they don’t have a 240v outlet like ours, yes, these sorts of plugs / sockets are used

Thanks - yeah the 12V output is more like AC and ripply as hell, it has no output cap at all, its straight from the windings into a rectifier and into the plug. Already got that side of things sorted and have it regulated now and I can vary the output voltage to suit.

Sounds like these 'V shaped' DC plugs are just a general nightmare.

Thanks for the replies guys.

So those V shaped DC ones are available it seems. Don't think I will go there though, ill look to change the socket out.

Has anyone seen in their travels the sockets for the T shaped plug shown above?

The other option is a standard cigarette socket like mentioned above too, yeah.

You can buy replacement ones for the Honda’s (Eu10, eu20 models), but they have a circuit breaker built in and are horribly expensive, so don’t go there.

I don’t like the whole “alligator clips to male plug” charging leads because if connected to a battery, the male plug pins are exposed and live. Everyone does it, but that doesn’t make it right.

If you wanted to go with a standard t pin plug, clips all 402/32 and 492/32 will do it. There are cheaper copies out there, replaced a lot of them over the years because they failed.
