Trying to figure out what this resistor is
« on: August 14, 2024, 04:21:45 am »
Hey all,

I have an Ego battery that is new from this year (already got a replacement want to try fixing this one too).  On the BMS, they changed to using a smd resistor or fuse marked 510 with a line over it.  Package size is 1206.  I opened the replacement battery and that is how I found this, I measured it and it does have a resistance of 51 ohms.  I did find some fuses that have the line above for fast acting and line below for lag time.  But I'm guessing that this isn't the case here since it's a 51 ohm resistor.  Anyone have any idea what that line might be designating?

01S = 10 ohm

Sorry I didn't read it carefully.

01S = 10 ohm

So I thought this as well.  But if you did it that way the 1 would be upside down.

For a fuse the traces are to small, i think.

Fusible Resistor??

This is what I was thinking, but I can not find a smd fusible resistor that's 51 ohms.  Was tempted to just use a normal 51 ohm resistor and see what happens...but I'm also not -totally- sure what would happen if it needs to blow if it would cause issues vs a fusible resistor.

51 Ohms , red ink is probably tolerance <1%

I wasn't sure about the red ink since the blown one was white ink.

I found 2 promising resistors:  1206 package, 51 ohms - one is .5% tolerance and 1w and the other is .1% tolerance and .25w.   I measured the working battery and there's about .19w over that smd.

My main concern was if this is a fusible resistor, would it matter if I just use a resistor that much?

[SOLVED]

A user on reddit was actually able to figure out what this is and figured I would post here should anyone be looking in the future.  TLDR it's NCR's marking system for non-trimming resistors.  The specs are pretty close to the .25w resistor I was already looking at.  Here's a spec sheet for it:

What is "non-trimming resistors"?

Is it film resistor that are full deposit and aren't cut trimmed? Implying full width current path and maybe higher surge withstand capacity?

I recognized the pink text from TA-I’s catalog (series RAS):

https://www.tai.com.tw/product/5c8yP3CZM4PXDqq7/685ZtD4gg2Qm5uXf

I don’t think text color is at all standardized to mean anything(?) Does the hat over the first number really indicate anything about type?

I had to look it up too. Basically normal resistors they use a laser to trim them and basically fine tune them to the exact resistance.  These I guess they don't "trim" at all and are just made to a super high tolerance from the start.  From the sounds of it allowing for a higher max working voltage.
