My DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor seems dead
« on: September 24, 2023, 10:13:41 pm »
I bought a DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor a few weeks ago. I've used it to edit a few videos in Resolve and I really like it.

But today I tried to use it and it seems completely dead.

Resolve (Linux) won't see it. None of the LEDs light up. It doesn't show up in lsusb. I've tried it on different USB ports (2, 3, and 3.1). I even took the drastic step of rebooting in Windows, and Resolve on Windows won't see it either.

I took it apart and checked the voltages; all (including the battery) seemed present and correct, except for a 5V rail. The 5V USB rail was there, but there is a separate 5V rail which wasn't there; however, I suspect this might be for when it is running battery powered, rather than USB powered, so might not be a fault.

Any ideas before I send it back to the supplier?

Thanks.
steve30.

Where is that 5V rail powered from if it is not the USB?

It has a 18650 LiIon cell which powers the unit for wireless Bluetooth operation. I'm guessing there might be a separate boost converter to provide the 5V rail when it is in wireless mode.

But that's only a guess.

I guess you already tried to use another cable or to connect it on another computer.
Have you tried connecting over bluetooth? It should at least show up in the list of devices to connect to. (don't connect a usb cable at the same time)

400 bucks for a keyboard is a lot of money. If it is under warranty send it back.

From the 4000+ pages  |O manual on page 952:  :horse:

Code: [Select]
To Reset the Speed Editor to its defaults:
1 Plug the Speed Editor into the computer via USB-C
2 Hold down both the CUT and SMTH CUT keys until the LEDs cycle off then on.
3 Or open the DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor Control Panels app, and press the Factory Reset key in
the Setup options.

Don't knock it, Blackmagic deserve praise for the amount and quality of documentation they maintain.

My main computer doesn't have Bluetooth, but I tried on a laptop and it doesn't show up on there in the list of Bluetooth devices. I've tried another cable and it makes no difference. I don't have Resolve installed on the laptop, but if I plug it in to the laptop, Windows won't detect it.

Also the reset command hasn't done anything. It seems completely dead.

Swake: I'm glad you managed to find the relevant part of the manual. I was wondering where it was. TBH it is a very well written manual; I am coming from a Kdenlive background, which usually involves lots of trial and error, and googling, so having a proper [up to date] manual is very good.

Interestingly, the manual says the Speed Editor board will only work with USB3. When it was working the other week I had it hooked up to a USB2 port with a C to A cable which only had the usual 4 pins (5v, GND, D+, D-).

I'll contact the supplier and get it replaced. I figured it was worth a forum topic in case I was missing anything obvious, or in case anyone has a similar problem in the future.

Well, I sent it back to the supplier and they confirmed it didn't work, so they sent it to Blackmagic for repair, and Blackmagic are saying it is OK.

Dear steve30, Although our engineer was able to replicate the fault BMD have advised that the unit has been tested and is fully working to spec, They have confirmed - 'This unit has now been assessed & the behaviour could not be replicated. It has been detected by Resolve via both USB & Bluetooth.' As such they will now return the unit to us.

Odd.

For those wondering, despite BlackMagic saying it was fine, the supplier said it still didn't work and had to send it back again.

After it being in for a month and a half, they sent me a replacement unit the other day, which I am pleased to say, works.

No idea what the fault was with the original unit.
