Tektronix TDS3034B Display Failure
« on: December 06, 2018, 09:43:57 am »
Hi.

I switched on my old TDS3034B scope, but the LCD display failed. VGA output is fine, and the scope seems to work fine otherwise.

The display only shows horizontal and vertical lines. I haven't opened the device, but I assume that a flex cable is either broken, or the connection between flex cable and lcd glass has gone bad. Backlight is still fine.

I guess it is next to impossible to repair a bad lcd module, so I'll need a replacement.

Where do I get a replacement screen for my scope?

maybe you can find a part number if you dismantle the lcd assembly and search for any part number written on it ?

The only link ive found : https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Original-lcd-display-LCD-panel-for-Tektronix-TDS3000-oscilloscope-TDS3012-TDS3014B-TDS3032-TDS3054B-TDS3032B-TDS3034B-Series/1917885574.html

350$ usd  outch,  must be substitutes somewhere ?

I know there was succesful attemps to put an lcd / tft monitor in some scopes with great success ?

I've nade some progress.

A youtube video showed another type of display for this series of machines - a NEC NL6448BC20-08. I found a datasheet for this and managed to buy an NL6448BC20-08E (the added letter shoud not matter) for 60 Pounds off ebay.
I'm just waiting for this thing to arrive.

Is that the same, drop-in display?  For that price I'll stop trying to save my display by turning down the brightness all the time.

Good job!

Nearly.
The original display was a  NEC NL6448BC20-08, the new one is a  NEC NL6448BC20-08E.
The datasheet says:
"Comparison table of NL6448BC20-08E and NL6448BC20-08
ItemNL6448BC20-08ENL6448BC20-08
Haze16%12%
"
There was a cover screen glued onto the display with double-sided sticky foam tape. I didn't transfer this to the new lcd, and so there is a 3mm gap between display and front bezel. I don't care about that.

You need to reuse the inverter board and the display cable.

just another idea: The ccfl tubes seem to be accessibly easy. If they are going dark it might be enough to replace them with strips of white LEDs.

PS:
I don't know where you are located, but you could have a look at ebay #123530231897.  You'll even get a new inverter board. The product description is wrong, though.

You forgot to upgrade your oscilloscope to a high-end model 3054B or 3064B.

I didn't know this is possible? Do you have a link?

Open the scope (You'll have to look up online how to open these, OBVIOUSLY made to frustrate anybody to get inside) and reseat all connectors, especially from power supply board to main board.  We have a bunch of TDS scopes and have to do this every couple years.
