In your photo the screen intensity is way too high. Until you get it working properly it is best to set the intensity way down to where whatever is displayed is weakly visible. You don't want to risk burning the screen.
Are you familiar enough with analog scopes to properly set the various controls? Ideally the only real problem is not knowing how to set it up. The early mixed analog/digital scopes can be especially tricky to figure out without guidance.
