HP16716A not recognize as expander board

Hi,

I recently bought an HP16702A logic analyzer with 2 HP16716A boards on ebay. Used as standalone boards,  the boards pass all the selftests. Used as a two configuration boards, the expander board is not recognize (unknow board) and the selftests on the master board fail at "Inter-chip Resource Bus Test". Does someone already faced to this problem ?

Assuming you have both the gray cable and the two flat-flex cables connected correctly, one thing you could try is to switch the roles of the two cards.  Sometimes just the master or the slave circuitry on one of them has failed.

There are many types of seemingly random failures for 167xx cards, but a large number are the result of corrosion underneath the plastic runners.  Over time, the adhesive HP/Agilent used attacks the traces and severs the connections.  The corrosion is visible as green crystals on the traces and vias around the runners.  If this is your problem, you can sometimes fix a card by removing the runners, cleaning the board, and bridging the damaged traces. 

I've also seen severe corrosion on the bottom side flat flex connector contacts (again, as a result of the adhesive).  You can try cleaning or replacing the connectors if this is the case.

Hi,

i tried the cards in two way: First with the expander on the master connected to J7. Then with the expander under the master connected to j5. I repeated each time by swapping the boards. And the result is the same: the expander is never recognize. I tested the cables and they are ok.

I completely removed the plastic runners because i saw on a thread on this forum that they cause corrosion. But i don't see critical damages: only a few vias have there solder paste became dull.

Is it possible that it lack a piece of software ?
