Help identifying SMD transformer
« on: October 15, 2024, 11:51:18 pm »
I'm repairing a very expensive Honeywell temperature controller, and ran into a shorted transformer. It's part of a VFD display board, so I'm assuming used to generate the needed voltages to drive it.

It's the 8-pin part labeled 006 YW (and 006 YX- on an identical board).

I can't seem to find any information on it, does anyone know how to identify it?

Thanks.

Might become difficult, probably it’s a custom wound transformer.
I have little hope that spare parts are made available by the manufacturer.
If you have a functioning unit, measure the required voltages.
Is there space to bodge in a separate converter module?

That's unfortunate. I guess the best option is to try and pick up a dead one off ebay for the display board/transformer. The one I'm working on seems to have been victim of a power surge or incorrect voltage. The power supply board had burnt parts all over but was fairly easily repaired. Thankfully the logic board didn't suffer any damage and is the only one that changes with the specific part number so sourcing the display part is fairly easy.

... and ran into a shorted transformer.

Hi!

How did you determine that the transformer is shorted?
The probability of such parts failure is very small.

The way the board looks, the transformer is toast…

Desoldered it and compared with the one on a good board. It has continuity between pins that are not connected to each other on the good one. If you look at the picture, the transistor near the coil was completely burnt, lifting the soldermask.

Would you like to disassemble and rewind it?

I can try to disassemble a similar one to understand how it works. It seems to have a ferrite O-ring around the spool.
