So after seeing and reading several reviews of the Atten 858D+ I thought I would also get one.

Bought one from evil bay and the item seems to have a faulty display. Would anyone know what the problem is ?

Would really appreciate if anyone one could help.

Without it in front of us it is difficult to say. The 7 segments per digit are clearly causing issue but it is not as easy as that.

I could give you one reason, the top segment of the low digit is connected to the right hand lower segment - this is causing that segment to light when the top lowest should be lighting. That is a possible but not particularly lightly reason.

It should be quite a simple circuit and I would start by visually checking the soldering for shorts. If there are none visible it could be something like a stray conductor under the multi-segment display or a faulty display. It might be a stray short pretty much anywhere on the board between the driver and the display. If you just bought it would sending it back not be an option?

Unfortunately, it looks like the LED display itself is faulty.

These displays have a 'common' pin for each digit - as all three digits are working, this shows the 'common' pin and associated drivers are working.

They then have a 'segment' pin for each of the segments (and decimal point) - as the top segment can be seen working on the other digits, it shows that this 'segment' pin and associated driver are working.

The repair would be to replace the entire LED display module - can you return it to the manufacturer if it is new?

After replying I decided to check for a diagram and here it is:

so based on the diagram I would have to agree with Cowana....

I would agree with the others, returning would be the best option, but I doubt fixing it would take very long or cost much.

Is there such a shop as "Evil Bay"?..... ebay?
Used?.....modified?..... or NEW?

The way I look at the dismantling.... if you are not returning it, I would suggest that you unsolder the LED display module and IPA clean, and scrub with a tooth brush the top side and bottom side of the whole board and the LED segment display. Just assume there is a invisible conductive liquid film stains on the board.
After that, dry it sufficiently.

Otherwise, return it under PainPal protection, I suppose...

I've contacted the Supplier and Its Chinese new year and they seem to be OFF till the 25th. Waiting to hear from them. so would it possible to replace with any display ?

Any common anode display with the same pinout would be a suitable replacement.

That said, if this is a new unit, they should just send you a new one at their expense.

OP can remove the MCU from the socket and test the LED display.
Just put multimeter on diode-test and each segment can be checked.

I see two LED faults - dead A seg and shorted other two segments, so I would check the display, in case the MCU is defective.

edit:
The LED pin numbers are wrong in the previous schematic. Here are the pinouts I have verified.
LED display P/N can be CL4031B or HS310401K-24, common anode.

99% chance it’ll be correct. If the listing has a pinout, you could compare it to be sure. But these things seem to be pretty standardized.

The seller has responded so i was thinking of requesting a refund or a replacement. I paid USD89.30/- and free shipping.

Are there any difference in Atten brand versus the other ones that has a custom firmware ? like parts availability and durability of the overall product and parts ? Would it be worth getting the other models, if so which one would you suggest ?

There's no way of telling what hardware you're going to get - even buying one with the same system part number as someone else could be a totally different board inside.

As such, the best option is just to get the cheapest unit you can find that has the options you need (detachable power cord/heat gun cable), and hope for the best when you open it up!

I meant with the custom firmware. Is the custom firmware about the precision of the temp ? and that is all.

you need to slow down and go back to the begining,
that board has a lot of solder issues.
the most obvious is on the pot and buttons.

check all the soldering.
then pull the processor out of the socket and look at the contacts,
and while it's out, use a 3v coincell & wires to check the display segments directly.

That's way too expensive for an 858D. I paid less than $60 shipped for my 858D+ from Amazon.

I did check those and I found several segments not lighting up.

The seller has agreed to ship another one but that would only be after the 26th of feb as it’s Chinese New Year.
