Simpson 269, should I be pissed or excited?
« on: October 28, 2022, 01:10:56 am »
I purchased a Simpson 269 series 2 meter from Ebay. It came in the mail yesterday and I unpacked it, put on the bench, selected the DC volts scale, applied 1V DC and of course nothing happened.

No problem, just a fuse I thought. Somewhere I read the fuse is an in-line type and mounted on the PCB. So I removed the cover and below is what I saw,

1625341-0

1625347-1

The PCB has never had any components installed on it! It looks brand new!!

The meter face looks new also,

1625353-2

I have a schematic with a parts list, but no PCB drawing with part locations.

So 3 options come to mind;

 1. Use it as a paper weight as it is,

 2. Purchase a second meter in rough shape and transfer the insides to this meter,

 3. Buy new parts and do a complete 'restoration' and end up with a NEW Simpson 269!!

I am leaning towards option 3, but I have 2 concerns;

 a. The meter doesn't work, If I can't repair it, it kind of kills the project.

 b. I not sure if I could find the selector switch and the riser card with the calibration pots on it.

So I'm not sure what I should do. Should I be pissed that I got ripped off? or excited about the possibility of having a NEW Simpson 269?

Was it maybe a display model??

Let me know what you think.

If you know of any resources also let me know.

I have attached two pictures of a spare Simpson 269 series 2 board that I have lying around.  Something isn't quite right, however.  Your pictures show four round holes in the board - my board does not have these.  Moreover, upon closer examination, it looks like the marking at the edge of your board says Simpson 267-268, whereas my board says 269-2.

Anyway, if you would like me to send you my board, I would be willing to do so for the cost of postage.  I also have the meter, but it is completely dead and it looks like a long time ago I tried to fix it to no avail and pretty much destroyed it.

Let me know via the eevBlog message system.

Very long shot but if you have this board I would love to have it, will be glad to send you $10 PLUS a prepaid shipping label, and arrange pickup at your door.  I have a 269 with a mess of inaccuracies and someone tried to repair it - I think using Primitive Pete's Hammer and Torch method.

Thanks
Art

PS - I couldn't figure out where the PM link is  :(

To me it looks like a prototype, maybe a demonstrator for an exhibition.

For Mike De:

Is this the stuff you are looking for?  This is out of an old 269 that was used for parts.

However, the small sprocket you ask for is only 13 teeth, not 15.  I don't know if Simpson changed something over the years.

PM me if you are interested.

I agree with Haenk.

We used to build dummy panel and switchboard meters that were used by Sales staff.

All show and no Guts.

Check that the meter movement functions and is the correct Full Scale Deflection before you pump a lot of time into it.

Yes, my guess was a demo or prototype.

Meter movement is dead.
