Winch Hoist Hand Controller Replacement
« on: July 08, 2023, 02:23:26 am »
Hey Everyone,

I'm starting a small business and included in the premises is a 1500lb winch. Unfortunately, the prior owner left the 2-button hand controller in about two inches of standing water so it's pretty much done.

The exact replacement controller is not available for purchase and while the whole unit is only $199.99 it's a very unexpected cost. It would be great to swap in a replacement instead of buying a whole new winch.

I have some experience with very rudimentary electronics building and repair (guitar pedal kits, fixing random broken appliances) but I'm at a loss to find a replacement controller that I can wire into the unit.

It looks like most of the hoist remotes I see are for boat and off-road trailer/winches and are 12v. I've also found one that's designed for 120v.
I'm wondering which of these (or any) would be best and how one would wire one of these in this situation:

Some are 3-wire while others are 4-wire.

Also, would something like either of these work?

I'm sorry if this is not helpful because I want it to be helpful.

Your topic title includes "Winch Hoist" which is a contradiction in terms.  Not knowing the difference between a winch and a hoist can unexpectantly lead to injury or death.

A winch is for pulling, parallel to the ground, and perpendicular to gravity.  It should never be used to hoist anything.

A hoist is made for lifting, perpendicular to the ground, and parallel with gravity.  A hoist has safety features that substantially improve the safety of overhead lifting.  A winch does not have these features which makes it unsafe to use a winch to lift or suspend anything heavy.

     Just so you know.

I happen to have a Badlands winch--a smaller 12V model.  It is a useful tool but I derate it 50% below its nameplate capacity.  This is a subjective judgment made after comparing similarly rated but far more robust American made winches.
