delta elektronika SM 3540 capacitor replacement
« on: September 11, 2022, 12:26:32 pm »
I was in the process of recapping my SM3540 since one capacitor had already failed.
It was there when I found a cap with 3 legs  and I'm not sure if I can just replace it with a modern counterpart. Two of the legs are connected to the minus rail, so its job is to increase current handling?  It is situated right on the output board.
Type: 674D 820µF 50V DC

I did not find anything to be special about this thing on the internet or am I missing something?

I would go ahead an replace it with a normal electrolytic cap 820µF/50V/105°C.

Maybe somebody can prove me wrong:)

The extra pin is probably for added mechanical stability, since it's a physically large radial cap. No indications that this is a dual cap or anything special.

Yeah you were right. Tore it apart for fun, the pin is just connected to ground.

Just check the PCB layout and make sure the two ground legs of the the capacitor aren't used to jumper between two different parts of the circuit.
