Soniq E40W13C-AU TV Stuck on standby
« on: July 24, 2015, 01:30:46 pm »
Hi everyone

Attempting my first ever LCD/LED TV repair. The problem is that the TV has power but is stuck on standby. When the power button on the TV or the remote is pressed, there is no response. The LED at the front of the TV just stays red and doesn't blink or flash or do anything else.

I opened the back of it apart and saw no visible sign of the typical capacitor faults discussed in other threads; bulging, leaking etc. However, I decided to replace all the capacitors, except for 2 (The big one and the second biggest one) because I'm still waiting for it to be delivered, with panasonic, rubycon and nichicon ones (Low ESR where appropriate).

I checked the voltages at the terminal connector to the mainboard, before and after the capacitors change and the results are the same.

12 V ~ 12.4 V
12 V ~ 12.4 V
5 V ~ 5.1 V
5 V ~ 5.1 V
5 VS ~ 5.0 V
STB ~ 5.0 V
ON/OFF - 0V
ADJ - 0V

From these results I am assuming the issue is with the mainboard. I try finding another mainboard online but no luck. There's no schematic as far as I can tell, so I'm thinking of trying to fix the mainboard myself.

Can anyone please point me in the right direction on where to start my diagnostic of the mainboard? Which are the usual components that fail?

I try doing a bit of diagnostic myself and these are my findings:

1) All caps seems to be working fine under load (but I might replace them later just to be safe)

2) Tracing where the signal from the IR goes when I press the power button on the remote

Refer to the Attached picture

When I press the power button on the remote control the voltage at the IR terminal connector on the IR input pin changes (I think from ~5 V to 4.6 V from memory). I did a continuity test and found that the signal from that pin goes to the two SMD components in the picture I attached before it goings into the big Chip. However, the white looking component seems to fail the continuity test. The voltage change does happen on the left side of that component when I press the power button on the remote but there is no voltage change on the right side. I'm not sure what that component is to perform a proper test on it. Does anyone know? Thanks.

3) From visual inspection of the photo (I have attached this photo as well) I took of the mainboard, I also found that one of the Voltage Regulator the BM1117-ADJ looks discolored compare to the rest of the components on the board. Is this normal? or is it burnt?

4) I disconnected the On/Off pin and ADJ pin from the mainboard. Then connected the On/Off pin to 5VS with a 1k resistor and the ADJ pin to 5VS also with a 1k resistor.

The backlight and screen turned on (and stayed on). However, nothing came up on screen.

It seems I'm still stuck on standby because the red LED at the front of the TV did not change; it just stayed lit up the whole time even though I was pressing buttons on the remote and the controls on the side of the tv.

I also measured the voltages across that discoloured voltage regulator (BM1117 - ADJ) and these are my findings.

Assuming pins are numbered left to right:
Between GND - Pin 1 = 141.4 mV
GND - Pin 2 = 0.790 V
GND - Pin 3 = 5.18 V

I also measured the other voltage regulator (BM1117 - 3.3)
Assuming pins are numbered left to right:
Between GND - Pin 1 = 0V
GND - Pin 2 = 3.295 V
GND - Pin 3 = 5.17 V

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Best Regards

The BM1117 - ADJ is faulty, remove it and measure the resistance between pin 2 and ground, there could be a short somewhere in the 5V rail.

Thanks for the reply. I'll check it as soon as I can desolder it. However I managed to check it on the board itself without any power and I found that:

BM1117-ADJ

Assuming pin number from left to right:

GND - Pin 1 = 102 ohms
GND - Pin 2 = 454 ohms
GND - Pin 3 = 1k ohms

BM1117-3.3

Assuming pin number from left to right:

GND - Pin 1 = 0ohms
GND - Pin 2 = 341ohms
GND - Pin 3 = 4 ohms

Also being in Australia, it will take me too long to get the BM1117 series, can I use the LM1117 series instead?

Their datasheet:

BM117
http://www.bookly.com/images/BM1117.pdf

LM1117
http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/lm1117-n.pdf

They both have similar specs except the LM1117 series has a max output current of 1.5A (I know the datasheet state 800mA) but one I'm thinking of getting is the LM1117MP, which according to RS components is 1.5A max current output.

Thank you

Regards

LM1117-ADJ should be OK, maybe it's only a faulty voltage regulator.
Just in case, order at least one spare.

Thanks for your advice I replaced the ADJ LDO IC and the TV finally turns on. It behaves while no input is in but when I plugged in the chromecast, it behaves for about 5 second and then the image is distorted. Please refer to the pictures. Thanks

Same problem with other video sources ?
Is the fault related to the temperature of the new ldo ?

Hi Thanks for the reply. I've replaced all the capacitors on the main board and the problem still persists. I guess I might need to look for one of these universal LCD board. Any idea where I can get them? delivered to Australia?

Hi been looking at these universal LCD Controller. Will this one do?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-LCD-Controller-Board-TV-Motherboard-VGA-HDMI-AV-For-LCD-Panel-hot-/291374776533?hash=item43d74a40d5

or are they specific to the model number? Which I'm also having a hard time finding. I found one on a bar-code stuck to the metal bit at the bottom of the back of the screen (BLD400CA01). And another one on the board, which connects to the LCD panel (LSC400HM06-T01). Which one do I go by?

That is the one I personally use :) but it doesnt have firmware for your particular panel, you would have to test  similar firmwares hoping for a match (2ch 10bit with similar timings)

I looked at your pictures again and https://www.eevblog.com/forum/repair/soniq-e40w13c-au-tv-stuck-on-standby/?action=dlattach;attach=162446;image appears to have a hole in the eprom chip?
have you checked your board for shorts? how much current does it draw in stnadby/when powered on?

I was going to replace the EEPROM chip before I completely give up on the main board. No I haven't checked that yet, I have got a clearer picture (Please see attachment). From this picture do you still think there's something wrong with it? Also if I needed to replace it, do I have to get the same chip? is there a suitable alternative? It's kind of hard to find. But there is one seller on eBay selling it. Thanks for your help.

whats that darker circle on the chip?

chip itself is no problem , its just an spi flash, but you would need exact firmware for this tv
check for shorts
and check if its reading firmware off of it with osciloscope/logic analyser (clock/data pins)

Hi there, I have the same problem with my TV and I was wondering if you ever replaced the SPI flash chip, and if so, how did you get the firmware transferred to the new chip?

Dear All

This looks like a classic case of "to a man with a hammer, everything look like a nail".  As far as I can tell, this is a software problem, not hardware.  The hack/work around is to unplug the antenna cable (maybe all cables except power), turn the power off at the wall, switch it back on and try to turn it on.  If it doesn't work, rinse and repeat.  Then plug the antenna cable back in.

My mum has this problem on he E40W13A-AU.  There's firmware upgrade available at ftp://ftp.quatius.com.au/firmware/ that purportedly will fix this "boot loop".  I'm going to be trying it tonight.

I hope that helps.

Cheers

Hi, i am having the exact same issue with the same model of TV. I cant seem to get the firmware to install onto the TV and have tried many different types of firmware for TVs with the same panel or control board but i cant get it to even turn on. i have (just for sanities sake) made sure all the capacitors and chips in undamaged. if you know what to do i would be very grateful for the information.
btw i got this TV off the side of the road. the red light turns on when its plugged in and the TV still has some of the factory plastic wrap on it so it mustn't be very old.

I know this is an old post, but did you get the TV repaired? I got the same issue with the same TV model, and I've seen lot of people reporting the same issue!
