Flyback stability by increasing upper divider resistor?
« on: January 22, 2024, 09:34:48 pm »
Hi,
If you are doing offline flyback  with  the lowest component count feedback loop, then you are doing
it like in the attached with TL431.
Output caps are 2 x 35ZLJ330's by Rubycon.

These have  tan delta = 0.12 at 120Hz. This would mean ESR  of some 0.48 Ohms at 120Hz.

From post #11 of this

https://www.edaboard.com/threads/calculate-esr-of-electrolytic-capacitor-over-frequency-sweep.407674/

Its pretty obvious that the actual ESR of the 35ZLJ330 at 120Hz is going to be around 0.18 Ohms or so.
Nothing like as high as 0.48 Ohms.

Now , low Capacitor ESR is the biggest threat to stability of the shown flyback. So a good way of calculating ESR is needed.
However, this is not to be found.

Instead we are left with simply having to increase the Ohmic value of the upper divider resistor in order to increase phase margin (and simultaneously increase lower divider resistor
so output stays at 24V).

So how many people (who use the attached schem) simply up the divider resistor in order to increase phase margin in the face of the onset of future electrolytic caps
with ever decreasing ESR?
