Potentiometer replacement
« on: May 25, 2019, 09:53:24 pm »
I have attached a picture of the 50k  \$\Omega\$ pot that needs to be replaced.

Problem is I can't find any pots with an integrated switch which is what the two side pins are for so I'm looking at possible alternatives on Aliexpress but still couldn't find a similar shaped one but what about this one: https://bit.ly/2K3OeTT.

Will it get the job done? If not is there a certain name this type of potentiometer carries?  :-//

The pot you have found will work as long as:

1.  The switch rating is sufficient (voltage and current)
2.  The taper of the pot (linear or logarithmic) is the same.

Judging from the link you show, there is no way to tell these things.  If the switch rating isn't sufficient, the new switch will fail sooner than it should.  If you replace a linear with a logarithmic or vice versa, you will get a strange action, with most of the control at one end or the other of rotation.  It will work, though.  Volume controls are usually logarithmic and tone controls usually linear.

From your picture it appears that what is wrong is that the old switch is broken or worn out.  At least what it looks like to me is that the switch point is missing and it won't make contact.  That is a very common configuration that was used for many years and perhaps you can find a junk radio to cannibalize or, even, just move the switch section over.
