gpsdo antenna
« on: June 10, 2014, 06:01:53 pm »
I recently aquired a gpsdo, i cannot mount an antenna outside, but i can put it in a window. Would it be possible to buy a regular 5v gps antenna and use that, as opposed to a regular antenna.

One thing to watch out for is the antenna voltage. Modern gps use 3.3V and so modern active antennas are geared for this. Older gps modules used 5V and older antennas are geared for this. I have a modern gps module that produces 3.3V and I bought a GPS antenna off e-bay which turned out to require 5V and it is not happy with 3.3V. I then bought a second timing antenna that is happy with any voltage between 3V and 10V.

Other than that I've just used a 3.3V puck antenna in a window and it worked ok - not as good as my outside antenna, but ok.

You'll just need to try it and see, the main issue is it will find it harder to keep track especially older units that are less sensitive than modern gps ones.

This is the antena I was looking at:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antenna-magnet-GPS-Active-TNC-male-plug-90-1575-42MHz-3-5V-RG174-3M-cable-/261348083058?pt=US_Radio_Comm_Coaxial_Cables_Connectors&hash=item3cd98f4572
or going with the trimble alternative

I don't see anything that says what the gain of that antenna is.  It might be good - might be bad.
