TIL311

I did a little video on this guy because I always thought it was pretty cool. If you have never heard of it, it's a single digit hex display with built in logic to drive the leds, all you have to do is interface with four data pins and a latch.

These little displays is really cool, and they is very useful for circuits without a mcu.

Also, there is the TIL306 with a decade counter and BCD output. Very useful.

That one is cool, seems rather similar to the 311, though the package seems really long compared to the digit size haha.

Yes, packages is rather large.
But compared with using separate counters/latches/drivers a lot of board space is saved.

These displays used to be high end and very expensive. They are not 7 segment, they do round corners and look much better.

The problem with these ancient parts is power consumption. 5v only and typically 105mA to while displaying a zero, max to display a zero is 180mA.

The power for a TIL311 two digit display could run a 5" LCD with backlight.

Sure they draw a lot of power, but, they just look so... awesome!

They are still very expensive! 0_o
