Industry/industrial recommended 802.11?
« on: September 11, 2020, 02:23:43 pm »
Looking into bringing in comm protocols into our designs. Particularly interested in 802.11 (wi-fi) and wanted to hear from the community about the commercially available options offered to SMEs. Been looking at SiLabs, Espressif and Realtek's architectures & toolchains so far (some of those those seriously 'hyped', btw), but if there are any other(s) of your personal/professional experience that worth looking into please do let me (us) know. Thanks!

Check out the Cypress-based (previously Broadcom IoT) WiFi modules. I think the below are good options:

• Murata Type 1GC (CYW43907)

• Murata Type 1DX (CYW4343W - requires external MCU)

• AzureWave AW-CU427-P (PSoC 6 + CYW43438)

Some dev kits below:

Type 1GC kit (has video tutorials) https://www.cypress.com/documentation/development-kitsboards/cyw943907aeval1f-evaluation-kit

Type 1DX kit (has video tutorials) https://www.cypress.com/CY8CPROTO-062-4343W

AW-CU427-P kit https://www.cypress.com/documentation/development-kitsboards/cyw9p62s1-43438evb-01-psoc-62s1-wi-fi-bt-pioneer-kit

Thanks, I'll certainly have a look.

You probably know that already; in term of industrial grade comm are they embedding common hardware encryption accelerators? and are they performing/reliable if so? Quickly had a glimpse of their marketing material & tools but have yet drilled down to the core meat. If you've noticed reliable accel performance -vs- 'others', please let me know, that'd be a step up in the research already

edit: I'll give that last one a trial (CYW43438). Has the hardware accel for that AES 128bit key... let's see. Yet another eval board on its way :/ Jeez, adds-up...

Verdict; after quite a few vendor kinks, bottlenecks and other marketing hypes cancelled, we've settled and got our id with Qualcomm' Solutions and toolchains.

Just for the record, Digi has a bunch of options although they can run rater expensive....

Thanks, looking good.

Incredible the amount of various SoC and SiP we get nowadays, all doing the very same thing; marketing/hyping simple hobby connectivity and generic protocols! I swear however that finding an industrial grade solution is damn difficult. As in; "security" with the supportive SDK, toolchain and capable hardware acceleration that goes with the solution.

I understand Qualcomm isn't exactly the most open of them all and rather secretive, however when phoned, ID'ed and revealing your true intentions the magic box opens up. Impressive tools, recommend.
