Smart car DAB radio project - OEM Grundig - Arduino
« on: December 05, 2017, 01:22:31 pm »
Hi!

I have an Smart Roadster and it´s radio is not DAB capable. I was thinking about using the case of an original radio but with Arduino internals. I have a few challenges to overcome, but I am sure I will learn on the process.

Right now, I have a tape player and I am trying to identify it´s front panel connections so I can use as a display and controls for the Arduino:

The IC is a Philips (now NXP) PCF8576CT that controls a 40 pin 8x1 LCD with some additional segments. It can be controled by I2C. From the connections, and the datasheet, I have identified that the LCD has a 4-mux interface to the IC.

The buttons are connected thru resistors so I can use 2 analog inputs to interface with the 2 halves of they keypad.

I think is quite safe to power it with 5v and start messing around. What do you think?

You probably understand, that it will be cheaper to buy the radio?
Otherwise, do you know how you will hook up antenna and route out analog audio out of the module?

Yeah, I'm very aware of the cost... but I am more interested in earning and reverse engineer that saving a few pence.

For the radio module, I'll probably use something based on the Si468x, and for amplifier it would be a TAS6424. I'm considering using I2S for the audio instead of analog. Probably a bit too ambicious for me, but I'm sure a will learn a lot during the process.

Yesterday I ws trying to identifiy some of the connections on the front panel board:

1 SDA
2 led +
3
4
5 GND
6 encoder
7 Encoder switch

1 buttons right side
2 buttons left side
3
4 SCL
5 VDD
6
7 led -

And then what DAC from I2S? Seems like the projects gets complex every step in.

TAS6424 supports i2S inputs.... but you are right, complexity escalates rapidly in this project.
