Small reuseable stencil frame?
« on: December 03, 2017, 07:17:28 pm »
It's cheap and easy to get small stencils made from places like OSH Stencils, but when you're working with real fine pitch components it can be difficult to keep the frameless stencil and PCB in place when applying.

Is there a special type of frame that a frameless stencil can be bolted onto? Or do you just need to always buy framed ones?

OSH Stencils sells some "L" shaped plastic thingies that can make an adjustable stencil "frame".

You place them on a table top, stick your board in the hole, tape them down,  align the stencil to the board, tape it down... voila... adjustable stencil frame.  You can also use pieces of PC board material or plastic that is the thickness of your PCB to make a stencil "frame".

Buy 4.95mm steel dowels. Add two 5mm holes to the PCB. The same two 5mm holes to the stencil. Add a note asking the manufacturer not to increase the stencil hole size. Stack 3 PCB together, place two dowels in the stacked holes, place the stencil above. Boom, perfectly indexed and stable cheap frameless stencil.
