BOMIST - Parts Inventory and BOM Management for Electronics
« on: November 06, 2017, 07:55:57 am »
Hey everyone,

Some time ago I wrote here about BOMER. A software for Parts Inventory and BOM Management. Just to let you know that it's now called BOMIST and it just went out of BETA.

It runs locally, so no server nor setup required and you can have as many databases as you want (just run as many instances of BOMIST as you want).  It is integrated with Octopart, meaning you get plenty of useful real-time data: datasheets, descriptions, package names, values as well as other usefull information are automatically fetched online. Also, importing data into BOMIST is VERY easy which means you'll get up and running in no time. BOMIST will keep improving, many new features are already inline and your feedback is always greatly appreciated. Give it a try, it's FREE.

Just tried it and I must say you've done a lot of work! Feels much better now, compared to BOMER.

The only feature missing to be the perfect fit for my small startup is the ability to have sub assemblies in the BOM. Such that it's easier to support product variants.
I will echo my thoughts in your https://gitter.im/BOMIST/Lobby

Good job man!

@blueskill: that option is definitelly on the table, I understand many people would prefer a perpetual license but for now I'll focus on subscriptions. I have to think a bit more on the "perpetual license" model and will have to do some changes on the billing system as well. Do not forget you can pay on a monthly basis, meaning you use the PRO features only when you need them and then you can go back to the FREE version and all data is preserved.

@alexanderbrevig: thanks so much! and I have good news: Variants should be available on the next update (to be released this or next week) - stay tuned? (I'll back to you when it's ready and ask for some feedback of course)

Hey guys!

Just in case you missed it, you can now:

* Add Alternative Parts
* Use Linked BOMs (BOMs that use other BOMs)

If you haven't downloaded BOMIST yet, it's right here: https://bomist.com/

As a hobbyist with 1000's of parts, I need a part management system, just to find my components back. I installed Bomist, which looks like a nice system, with more features than I need.
One -important - thing is missing though. Is there a way to indicate where precisely a part is stored, so that it appears in the displayed line of the part?
I can use the 'storage' field to identify identify the about 15 drawer racks, 25 boxes etc. that I have by making a drop down entry for each of them (Would rather enter the generic 'HT6x4-rack' and add a number)

However, I cannot indicate where in a rack (with 33 drawers, each having 3 slots) the part is actually stored.
I can put that info under 'notes' as a text field, but then it is difficult to sort and printing a part index.

Would it be complex to add an alphanumeric field for part_location?

Alix

Hey Alix, thanks for the feedback!

The 'Storage' field has an hierarchical organization and you can add as many levels as you want.
Also, one thing that is not documented but exists: you can import Storage names though a text file, with levels (depth) defined by tabs. (right-click on the Storage table, under Settings, and Import)

Would this work for you?

Don't mean to necro the thread but I have recently started using BOMIST as my inventory management system.
So far out of the 5 I have tried, it is very good and probably one of the best!
I do have a few issues but I think that might be more to do with individual component suppliers or my scanner.

The biggest feature for me is scanning barcodes and making barcodes for stock tracking.
LCSC barcode has so far worked the best. MPN and quantity being detected.

Samsung not working. CL10A475KQ8NNNC is MPN and 4000 is quantity.
CH1FPAC/CL10A475KQ8NNNC/0776/4000

Farnell also not working but this might be my scanner?
[)>06K17/05/21 12.33 PMP1PMCUSD16P40B12RO3P2362676Q79D1T4LCN4K001
Date code 17/05/21 12.33
MPN is MCUSD16P40B12RO
Order code 2362676
Line number 001

Wurth
[)>061P629105150521Q1501T34001001205000016D20201211

1P Part Number 629105150521
Q Quantity 150
1T Lot Number 340010012050000
16D Date code 20201211

When I scan the Wurth data matrix with my phone, there are some encoding characters between each section. Again I presume my scanner is at fault here?

Ideally, when I scan a reel and there is already a part for it, BOMIST should add the scan as another reel under inventory.
Currently, it tries to add it as a part.

I have tried to make barcodes but my Dymo 4XL is having a lot of trouble. I think this is more down to Dymo being cunts and locking one out of the settings on the printer.
I have yet to try with my other thermal label printer.

Anyone can confirm Farnell and Wurth data matrix work for them and it is just my scanner?

Hi @Jackster - thanks for thumbs up! Mario here, BOMIST's developer.

To scan some vendor-barcodes (eg Digikey, Mouser, Farnell, Wurth) your scanner needs to be configured so it replaces some non-text/control characters the barcodes include. In the end, the scanned text should look more like this:
Quote
[)>06{GS}K11477880{GS}14K016{GS}1PCRCW0603220RFKEA{GS}Q30{GS}11]

You can find more info about this and an example on how to configure a Zebra scanner here: https://bomist.com/learn/barcodes/#scanning-vendor-barcodes

Hope this helps! If you have any other issues feel free to reach out.

Thought it would be this! Thanks for confirming.

No documentation in the small booklet they give you with my scanner but I opened it up and found the module inside and was able to find a good document with all the data for it.
Quite the job, unlike the Zebra scanner's single barcode.

Only managed to do GS so far, the others are not listed. But Farnell and Wurth codes are now working as expected.

Anyone using this software and experiencing very slow performance? I am trying it out but after clicking "Create Part" it is taking around 15 seconds to return to the main page. This is on a new install, fast machine that has no trouble with Inventor or KiCad, so far four parts total added to the database...
