pc power supplies

i was watching the rigoI power supply video and was thinking about other devices we take for granted. i was thinking about pc power supplies and was wondering if anyone has looked into the damage components may be receiving on the drive power supplies. of course there is regulation but is it enough? what is the quality of the dc feeding external devices. the low cost of drives, cases built to hold arrays, the increase in fans used to cool that additional hardware. especially with all of the new power saving features in use not just going into stand by but reducing processing load on the fly, could that be slowly damaging other components with transient spikes?

would it improve reliability to compartmentalize specific devices to a second and third power supply?

Multi rail PC PSUs are very common nowadays, though the cheap ones pretty much all lie. A quality PC PSU is about as clean of a power supply as you could get (second only to batteries) as a commodity good.

thanks for the reply. I was just wondering about it now that I am doing more component level repair it is becoming very clear how unreliable some of the parts that are being used in everything. I thought it would be interesting to see but as you said cheap parts there is no garuntee. again thanks for the reply.
