Leap Motion Project Ideas?
« on: October 08, 2013, 08:05:54 pm »
He all, so this weekend I was at a hackathon where they had everyone playing with leap motion.
We were fortunate enough to place in the top 3 and received free leap motion hardware as a reward. Now I really did enjoy using the leap motion, but now I am at a loss as to what to do with it. I mean of course there is tons to do, but deciding what to do is hard.

Personally, I would like to do something which brings the leap motion out of the standard used case. I was thinking maybe something with a robotic arm since the leap motion has fairly good resolution for subtle hand gestures. Some issues I noticed during the hackathon was that at some angles you would loose track of your hand completely. It's not prefect, but it does indeed have some pretty nice used cases.

So anyone have project ideas? Something that won't take too long but utilizes this technology well. I figure the robotic arm might take a bit longer than I would like to spend with this.

For those who might not know what leap motion is, here is a link to their webpage: https://www.leapmotion.com/

Cheers,  :) :) :) :) :)

We are planning to use one with a DIY pick and place machine currently being built to add manual control to the steppers so we can place the components onto small runs or one off boards.

There are some photos of the build so far on http://www.flickr.com/photos/brian-dorey/sets/72157635317638526/ and a few videos on my youtube page https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3rrX8tBXk8eGutDTAHdXDQ of the initial testing of the drivers, software and hardware. Still got a huge list of bits to finish before it will be fully working :(

I heard that the leap motion is extremely good workout device. I mean working 8 hours with your hands in air in that position is just mean.

yeah, I must say that is a bit of a down side to it right now. I have tried various positions in order to be able to get kind of a lazy orientation. A friend has the best use case with it. He has a table in which the monitor sits (an apple thunderbolt display), and he has mounted the leap motion and has done the interface. Works well for him, and is a lazy orientation. The display can pop back out in his mount and he can use a regular keyboard as well. It's quite ingenious.
