MAIDA REGULATOR (appnote, shematic and more)
« on: October 03, 2019, 12:52:40 pm »
Hi

I google a interesting appnote LB-47 from Texas Instruments http://www.ti.com/lit/an/snoa648/snoa648.pdf

The autor name is Maida so this  design is called as "Maida regulator"

Is it good or bad?
What about benefit?
Anybody built it?
What experienced EEs can say at all?

Is it good idea to modify it with MOSFET?

I have used the MOSFET version, similar to the one shown here, for relatively high voltage (140 V output) with good success.  The extra diodes shown for protection are very important.

Is it possible to change LM317 with more common LM78XX?

Are you kidding? The LM317 has been in common and prolific use for 40+ years. I built my first power supply with it back in the 80s! So, it should be just as available in Antartica as the LM78xx series.

"Maida regulator" is only 25mA output current. How much current do you want?

Of the LM317-type HV reg IC's:
Supertex LR8 good to 450V but a little TO-92 or DPAK.
TL783 to around 125VDC but needs minimum 15mA load.
ST VB408B 400V 50mA but hard to find.

"Maida regulator" is only 25mA output current.

At least 120mA will be ok
Is it possible to add pass transistor this way?
