Project: Fixing powering issue of WS2812 LED Strips
« on: January 10, 2021, 08:01:34 pm »
Hello,

I'd like to introduce you to my small side-project: Neopixel Booster (https://roboticsbrno.github.io/RB0004-NeopixelBooster/).

What is it? It is a small step-down module for long strips of WS2812 LEDs. These strips struggle with delivering power as the power traces on them are not designed for the enormous currents these LEDs consume. I use these strips a lot and I always bound a thicker wire to them to solve their powering issue. But the wire had to be really thick and the strips become tough and impractical. Therefore, I designed the NeopixelBooster: I can power my LEDs from up to 18V, thus I need a thinner wire. I just cut the strip every 50 cm a join it with one module.

The whole setup works well and the "upgrade" process of the LED strips is also guite quick.

You can read more about it in the project documentation: https://roboticsbrno.github.io/RB0004-NeopixelBooster/
And you can find the sources on GitHub: https://github.com/RoboticsBrno/RB0004-NeopixelBooster
