MicroSD socket
« on: September 09, 2013, 12:31:20 am »
Are there any MicroSD card sockets that are able to be mounted vertically on a PCB? Or is the common approach to design a small board to hold the socket along the PCB edge, and some mounting hardware to go with it (and a small ribbon cable back to the main board)?

Or alternatively are there any panel-mount MicroSD card sockets? I've looked and haven't found anything like that.

Basically, I would like to expose a MicroSD card slot in the front panel of a project with as little ceremony as possible.

Maybe you can swap the straight pins for angle pins that would change its orientation.

That's the most common thing I've seen.

I gather the PCB you want to attach to is mounted on the front panel? I'd probably use a daughter board mounted through a slot in the main panel PCB and attached with right-angle headers. http://www.altronics.com.au/index.asp?area=item&id=P5420

Currently it isn't mounted to the front panel, but it could be (still designing it). I also need to have a LCD display and some pushbuttons nearby - so if I can get everything onto a single PCB that is mounted behind the faceplate then that would be ideal.

I like that approach of using right-angle headers to support it - saves me from having to do any mechanical design other than providing a slot in the faceplate.

That's quite neat using a daughter board through a slot in the main board.  It would stop the usual problem of the daughter board being flexed sideways too much and cracking the pads.

maybe solder the micro SD double-sided board in the middle of the DIL 0.1inch header, like this, but the SD-board would be the left one, the main board the right one:

Well ... now I can't find the photo any more. |O

You take a Dual In Line male header:

and you put a double sided board in between the two rows of pins. Solder it on both sides and it's more rigid than just using 90 degree headers.

But of course, the ready-made vertical card connector is better, I think.

Vertical connector is what I was looking for, but they don't seem to make it with an ejection button  :(

Do you need this as a one off for a concept or in volume.

Volume is easy because it can be made to order. 3000 min would see the tooling costs covered.

If it is for a concept then I would say, cut and attach an existing eject base to the one you need.

I have not seen what you are looking for on any website, but I am sure that it probably exists somewhere.

The main thing is to locate manufacturers rather than trading companies, especially in China, if you can get to speak to the actual manufacturer it is mostly quite easy to work any problem out.

However, my experience is that the majority of trading companies will swear that they are the manufacturer.

We have an employee based in China and his full time job is visiting companies in China just for this reason. To check them out.

Just a one-off. And I'm not sure I will need it at all yet.

I'll make provisions for the attached vertical daughterboard idea just in case I need it, but will not populate any of it until then.
