Wide angle panel mount LED - what should I be searching for?
« on: December 20, 2023, 02:44:51 am »
Hey all, first time poster here.

I am currently trying to design a lockout buzzer system for a quiz game. I am trouble finding the part I am looking for, and I feel like I might not understand what terms I should be searching.

The part in question is a panel mount LED indicator. See the image on this page(https://buzzersystems.com/product/10-player-quiz-system/). See how the bulbs stick out above the box, and how you would be able to easily see the light from the side, even at a 90deg angle? I am having trouble finding an LED equivalent of this. I'm 90% sure the part in that image is an old radio shack part - https://www.ebay.com/itm/145140523364 (Radio Shack part no. 272-0325), but Radio Shack definitely isn't the best supplier these days, and besides, I'm looking for LED, not lamp.

When I search Digikey for panel mount led's with that kind of lens, I don't find what I'm looking for. All the LED's there are nearly flush with the panel, and the ones that stick out a bit from the panel barely stick out at all, and I am not confident that the light could be seen from a distance at a 90deg angle

The specific dimensions, ratings, etc. aren't super important, just the visual form factor. Am I just searching for the wrong thing, or just not searching hard enough? Any help would be appreciated!

Perhaps something like: https://www.digikey.com.au/en/products/detail/dialight/5563603304F/1832615
a panel mount dome led light.

a panel mount dome led light.

That definitely looks closer to what I am looking for, but a 50 USD unit price is a bit much for my application...

<fellbuendel> it's arduino, you're not supposed to know anything about what you're doing
<fellbuendel> if you knew, you wouldn't be using it

There are panel-mount lenses that take a standard 5mm LED like these (though they're a bit smaller): https://www.digikey.com.au/en/products/detail/visual-communications-company-vcc/CLF-280-GTP/4515440

Might be some larger options that would still be cheaper than an industrial indicator?  But that's the area where you tend to see those sorts of indicators, and the price tag tends to match.  Here's a cheap(er) option: https://www.mcmaster.com/5339T21/

I just did an open google search for panel lamp indicators and it popped up with several candidates that seem to meet your desires, at prices ranging from $0.65 up to $5.00 (and on up to incredibly high prices).  One that popped up was a Diallight indicator similar to the one mentioned above - at a unit price under $5 (but only in an amber color).

On Mouser and Digikey the show 15,000 plus options - and with no real filtering options.  I am not surprised you didn't see what you are looking for.  The open google search seems to zero in on things people are more likely to buy.
