PIC24 doing OCR for Bingo balls
« on: February 04, 2015, 01:09:38 am »
I made this project five years ago, and now I started from scratch to do it seriously. It is PIC24 based controller which locates and recognizes Bingo ball numbers. Sampling + processing time is about 450 ms, and the error rate is hardly mesureable close to zero. Described at http://www.voja.rs/PROJECTS/ocr/ocr_0.htm

This looks like a very cool project. And a lot of image manipulation software have to be written.
Good job! :-+

Indeed, quite an achievement for a PIC24.

It's the low cost TV camera, B&W or color, with 12V supply. I took it from some surveillance dome. It is recommended to use the higher focal length, so that the bigger area of the ball is covered. Then you shall have less problems with bad ball angular positioning, when all numbers on the ball are far from the center of the image.

This is sweet. Thanks for the detailed explanation on the site. I collect golf balls along a golf course and thought it would be cool to make some crazy device that washes them and sorts them by brand automatically. It's still way beyond my ability but your write up gets my geers turning. It would be really difficult though due to the crazy variations in golf balls and logos or scuff marks.

Anyways, thanks for the awesome share.
