PCB Layers

I searched for ordering a PCB and i found out that i need to input a layer number...

What does the layer number means at PCB's?

My guess would be that it's the number of copper layers on the PCB,  2, 4 etc...

I think you're referring to the copper weight, which is what determines the trace thickness.

Basically you can picture layer like storeys in a house.
If you put your traces on different layers, they can cross each others path without making a connection.
If you want a connection between traces (or planes) on different layers you need a plated hole in the pcb usually a via or component hole.
That way you can pack your board very tightly with components and traces. It is hoewever considered good practice to keep your layercount as low as possible.
2 layers is pretty much standard these days for hobbyprojects and the like.
Everything above 4 can get expensive rather quickly..

Actually even 4 layer boards are very expensive for low quantity. First example would be itead-tyle chinese services. 1pcs of 5x5 2 layer costs $10 and the same for 4 layers costs $65. I think this is because you can fabricate 2 layer pcb out of premade double-side copper clad laminate while for 4 layer pcb you need quite difficult lamination process to fuse the layers together.
