Implementing an interchangeable RS232 pinout
« on: December 16, 2012, 03:42:55 pm »
I need to figure out how to use two RS232 pinout variations with the same RJ45 connector and cable.
I tried Googling for an IC that will do the job but I don't know what keywords to look for.

The pinout can be set by the software and I don't need my circuit to detect it.

Any ideas?

Maybe analog switches or multiplexers, CD4066 or 4051?

The easiest way may be to use two RS232 transceivers, each wired according to one of your required pinouts, and then to enable only one or the other. You'll need a transceiver which can have its output turned off and made high impedance.
