Cap extreme leak
« on: May 28, 2014, 03:43:28 am »
Bought a Tek differential probe on eBay, looked fairly new and unused but did not work properly. Opened the casing and found a axial electrolytic capacitor apparently leaked, rusting the capacitor body and literally turned to dust one of the leads. I cleaned the mess, replaced the cap, now the probe works fine.

Looks more like a wet tantalum than regular electrolytic; they use a highly acidic electrolyte.

Wow! Hopefully you can get that working again assuming the leaked electrolyte hasn't damaged anything else.
