Hello,

I need to build an adapter for converting the video output connector from DVI to HDMI from an Amiga computer.

I cant figure out why the components are used on this adapter.

Can someone guide me on building something similar.

Its old and I cannot source one.

I'm confused.  You can't just use the correct cable?  Am I missing something?

I'm confused as well...HDMI and DVI are compatible, all you need is a connector changer, and they're only a couple of dollars:

I just want to know why the capacitors and diode are there?

Hi -- not quite sure what you are after?

DVI and HDMI digital video signals are essentially the same. So an adapter from DVI video to HDMI video is just a passive plug adapter. These can be had on ebay for a few $.

On the other hand, DVI does not carry an audio signal. (At least regular DVI does not; I believe there are some non-standard extensions which "abuse" some pins on the DVI connector to transmit audio.) If you have analog audio outputs only, and want to mix these into the DVI signal stream to obtain a complete HDMI signal including audio, that's definitely not feasible with a passive adapter only. The little PCB you have photographed does not look like it's capable of doing that either. (Although you mention that it receives audio signals on the large connector?!)

Could you please explain what output signals you have on your Amiga, and what you need to generate from them?

This seams to be an HDMI adaptor board for the MKII indivision board for an amiga http://www.bigbookofamigahardware.com/bboah/product.aspx?id=1956
created by http://www.kipper2k.com/

The MKII indivision board seamed to come with an DVI output http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1085
As stated before here in this thread you can get simple DVI to HDMI convertors or cables http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1180 , also on ebay, amazon etc
Note that DVI to HDMI will carry no sound , so you need a seperated audio cable

Real Circuit design time in minutes= (2 + Nscopes) Testim + (40 +120 Kbrewski) Nfriends

Testim = estimated time in minutes Nscopes= number of oscilloscopes present Kbrewski = linear approx of the nonlinear beer effect Nfriends = number of circuit design friends present

Do you see the components on that board.

Without schematic and knowing how Amiga talks to this, difficult to say. The three pin thingie on the board is likely a transistor and the rest are just few passives. My guess is that it is used to let the computer know it has been plugged in or to provide power to the HDMI connector.

EDIT: the three pin device is a diode (upper right pin is unused) and not a transistor, the two passives are capacitors.

Yeah maybe, looks like a diode.
Thanks anyway.

You might want to try to contact the person running http://www.kipper2k.com, as they look like the people who designed it.  kipper2k@shaw.ca is the "Contact" email.
