LED control options
« on: January 31, 2019, 11:52:09 am »
Morning guys,

Following on from my last post around the WS2811 drivers, I've been having a further think about the best way to control the LEDs on my control panel... But I've done the usual, and only gone and confuzzled myself!! Would you guys be able to offer your opinions on what you reckon would be decent bets for control options?

A little information around the panel:
  • Consists of 40x40mm "tiles", made up of 6 standardised PCBs
  • Up to 3 RGB LEDs on any one tile at any time, although some PCB designs have space for more
  • Two types of "special" tile - one 80x40mm tile with 3x 8x8 LED matrices for 4-digit alphanumeric display, and one 40x80mm tile with a unique tile design
  • approx. 300-350 RGB LEDs total, not including the 8x8 matrices

The options I've looked at so far are the WS2811/WS2812, and some matrix drivers... does anyone have any other suggestions? I'm ideally wanting to keep physical wiring to a minimum, to keep the inside of the panel reasonably tidy :D
