Magnetics for 1GbE. How to select?
« on: September 04, 2024, 08:42:19 am »
Hi,

I had a custom  board designed  with an 1GbE ethernet chip . Now that chip has gone obsolete and I am attempting to replace it with 88E1518 from Marwell.
In the earlier custom board used magnetics in Connector (HFJ11-1G01ERL) https://www.mouser.in/datasheet/2/706/fastjack_gigabit-520265.pdf

Now how to know about suitable magnetics for 88E1518. Will the above be compatible? How would one arrive at a suitable magnetics for ethernet PHY??

Usually every PHY manufacturer does have some application note how to select proper magnetics or hints about in the datasheet. Marvell sometimes calls this white papers. You already read the AppNote for Alaska PHYs?

You can also choice the same as the manufacturer use on its application board. The selected one isn't taken by accident there (usually).

I am attaching the schematics of application board.
Here Marvell uses
1.  H5007 for independent magnetics and
2. 0826-1G1T-43-F for magnetics in connector

Considering 0826-1G1T-43-F with common mode filter at MDI - PHY side,  a suitable Transformer will be Circuit B (Part No HFJ11-1G06ERL ) rather than  (HFJ11-1G01ERL) in https://www.mouser.in/datasheet/2/706/fastjack_gigabit-520265.pdf

Am I correct??
