I’m searching for a logic level (5V) N-channel mosfet transistor.
  • Uds >= 30V
  • Ids  >= 1A
  • SOT-23 or slightly larger
  • Like a 2N7002, but lower Rdson
I have found the IRLML2803.
There are others, but not that many.

I want a fairly common jelly bean type,
that is easy to purchase and preferably easily second sourced.

What type would be a wise choice?

You open parametric search page of your preferred distributor (digikey, mouser, arrow, farnell to name few) and find *yourself* what you need.

I am familiar with parametric searches.

"common jelly bean type,

is however and unfortunately not a searchable parameter.

Common jellybean MOSFET like venerable 2n7000 or 2n7002 while ago do not exist anymore . There is no single best transistor anymore but dozen of good choices. This week good choice with best price/performance in particular shop is one particular transistor but next week it could be another transistor, another shop. If I suggest you anything, other forum members will come with other suggestions and in general everybody will be right.

(my prefered one because of price and availability) http://www.aosmd.com/pdfs/datasheet/AO3400A.pdf
https://www.onsemi.com/pub/Collateral/FDT457N-D.PDF

I don't think there is a need for second source as there are plenty of similar devices on the market.

Here we go. Cheaper, smaller, higher current capacbility, lower rdson:  https://www.onsemi.com/pub/Collateral/NTGS4141N-D.PDF

Relevant parameters: number in stock, manufacturer standard lead time.
Also check at another distributor. If both Digikey and Mouser show same part with good stock, it's OK

SOT-23 itself makes it second sourceable; the pinout is the same so in worst case scenario you can use another common part.

What's the price of NTGS4141N? The official site says it's $0.1273 in 3000qty. My device costs US$0.032563 in 20qty: https://lcsc.com/search?q=AO3400A . Anyway, for sure there are cheaper devices. AO3400A is not the newest or cheapest, I just have plenty of them :).
