Where to buy dual row locking connector?
« on: December 12, 2020, 08:15:40 pm »
I need a dual row 24 pin (2 x 12) locking connector similar to the Molex 70553 series with 2.54mm pitch. The 70553 is a single row connector. I can't seem to find anything on Mouser or Digikey. It needs to be right angle PCB mountable in through hole style. It also has to be available from a reliable U.S. distributor.

I'm sure someone makes this but so far I haven't found it.

Have you had a look through the Samtec website? They are my new favorite connector company and sell direct and give free samples.

There is also the Molex Mini-fit-jnr range

https://www.digikey.co.uk/en/product-highlight/m/molex/mini-fit-jr-connectors?utm_adgroup=&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Dynamic%20Search_EN_Product&utm_term=&productid=&gclid=Cj0KCQiA8dH-BRD_ARIsAC24umYhlaEkxSMyS-fAjM0VQyOiIO-S-LsIFLybwdPadokPTBr10AxY4-MaArjZEALw_wcB

Which certainly comes as double row

and also TE Connectivity Micro Mate-N-Lok

https://www.te.com/global-en/products/connectors/rectangular-connectors/intersection/3mm-low-profile-micro-mate-n-lok-connectors.html?tab=pgp-story

I use the molex and TE options frequently, the pins are ok to solder if you are only doing a couple but multiple crimp tools work fine on them too. I think the micro mate-n-lok is 3mm pitch if that works? Both are available as RA, PCM mount, cable mount etc, lots of options and well stocked by digikey/Newark.

Nano-fit only goes up to 16 circuits. I checked the Mini-fit-jnr and the TE links but found nothing. I don't know why Molex calls it Minipfit-jnr. Those connectors are huge.

I can use anything with a pitch between 2.00 and 2.54 mm but nothing larger.

No offense, but if you couldn't find anything on Digikey, then you really need to improve your search skills.

Navigate to: Connectors, Interconnects > Rectangular connectors — headers, male pins
Select:
pitch: 2.0-2.54mm
rows: 2
positions: 24
mounting type: right-angle through-hole
fastening type: everything with "latch"

Shows 22 items in stock.

Because they're smaller than what came before them, and they've been around for a long time. In case you haven't noticed, electronics has been undergoing ongoing miniaturization throughout its century+ of existence, but things get named when they're invented, not based on things that have yet to come.

You may be right. :)

Using your search method I have decided to use the Molex C-GridIII part 90130-3124.

Honestly, it takes some practice. :)

Despite it being categorized as "latch holder", I don't think C-Grid is actually latched, I think it's just got locking ramps (i.e. a type of friction/detent fit). :/

Take a look at Molex i-Grid and Microclasp, JST* PAD and PUD, Hirose SignalBee, etc. (If a tight detent fit is OK, look at JST PHD.)

*I like JST connectors because you can get a name brand product at very aggressive prices. Their own web shop has fantastic pricing, and of course carries the full selection of products, which distributors don't necessarily.

tooki, thanks for the heads up about the latch. I will look at the ones you suggested. The customer is insisting on a latch so unfortunately I don't have a choice.

It's not a bad thing to require, really! Luckily there are plenty of options.

Molex Micro-Fit 3.0 is excellent and if you have room for it, you will not regret choosing it. This is my go-to "power" connector.

Molex CLIK-Mate is much smaller and also good... just not as good. This is my go-to "signal" connector.

Molex Micro-Lock Plus is new and I haven't tried it, but it looks promising.

All have excellent locking features and go to 24 circuits.

Thanks guys. I will keep looking. The connector doesn't need to handle any power. All signals in and out are at CMOS or TTL signal levels.

While it’s cool that you wanted to help, did you not look at any of the requirements beyond “locking” and “24-pin”? The thread goes into more detail, and none of those meet the basic stated requirements.
