Ideas needed for a Ping and Reboot unit,
« on: August 28, 2013, 04:58:06 am »
Hi everyone,

Hoping you can help out, I am looking for a device or something I can run on a PC that will ping an IP every 15 mins or so. If it does not get a reply , it must power cycle a USB relay or similar to cut power to that device being pinged and allow it to restart. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Many thanks
Alan

Do a google search for PC watchdog relay
Greek letter 'Psi' (not Pounds per Square Inch)

Hi,

I did more or less what you're asking for but using an Arduino. I needed to monitor a Draytek modem to see if it had hung, and if it had it would automatically recycle the power to it via a relay.

- Monitor Status
- Current Ping Time
- Output Power Status
- No. of resets recorded
- Minutes since last two resets
- Timing indicator (seconds)

Here's a couple pics of it in operation:

Hi Ian,

That's exactly what I am looking for, any rough guestimate on the cost ?

Many thanks
Alan

Hi,
No idea.....I just made it from bits n pieces......but it can't be expensive.....it's just an Arduino with an ethernet shield & LCD, and a few other bits n bobs.
The BOM is on my webpage.....as is the Arduino code, wiring etc.

if your router supports openwrt or ddwrt try those. Before doing this with the arduino like Ian i would consider buying a router which supports one of those (TP-Link 1043) the cost would be i think roughly the same.

If your PC  has a parallel port, you can just connect it to a relay, with a simple transistor/FET relay driver circuit, and a cheap 12V power supply. After that it is just programming of something like 5 lines of code in batch. If the computer doesn't have parallel port, buy an USB paralel for 3 dollars.
