How to make mobile charger using 9v battery?
« on: September 17, 2016, 05:17:39 pm »
It's a very simple project to do. I made it using only 9v battery, voltage regulator and female USB connecter and the design is extremely portable. Though you cannot full charge your mobile but it's a  fun project to try out.

It's not a very good idea. There isn't enough energy in a 9V battery to charge a phone. Using a low drop-out regulator or  a buck converter would be much better, as there's still plenty of energy left in the battery when the LM7805 will go into drop out i.e. stop regulating properly.

It could also be much neater. To make a slot for the connector, drill a few holes to make a rough slot which is still too small, then file it to shape. It will be much neater and look far more professional. Don't use a soldering iron to make holes, that's what a drill is designed for.

These days you can pick up a powerbank for less money than what a 9v battery and those parts cost.

I'd suggest using AAs, or better yet some D cells! That's where real capacity lives ! ;)

At least he says it's for emergency use.
I'm wondering if and how long a call you could make from one 9 V battery if the battery in the phone is fully flat...

I questioned the maker of the video and got a response that it's based on an actual kickstarter product.

However, that looks way too small to contain a TO-220 doesn't it? Would it contain something like step down converter?

Edit: d'oh... should have looked at the photos better.

I agree about this project being totally useless but try not to give the original poster too much of a hard time. Explain why it's pointless, rather than simply calling him an idiot.

As my previous post explained, I already had when you posted your reply. Then I explained that the kickstarter circuit did not contain a 7805, why a 7805 was a poor choice and repeated my request for a test. I am awaiting a response.

Oh dear, things get even worse:
