X-Ray Machine for R & D Lab
« on: March 12, 2017, 05:29:59 pm »
Hi Guys,
Last week, I came across a portable x-ray machine which I thought I have great use in my company's electronics R & D lab. I found few portable equipments on several websites but still not sure if that is one I need. I saw Dave's post from 2014. Does anybody have any experience using an X-Ray in United States? Are there laws restricting use of X-Ray machine in R & D labs in USA?

Thanks & Regards,

Yes, there are laws governing such equipment.  Technically, they vary by state, so you should inquire directly to the radiation-safety department (or their website) of the state where you intend to operate it.  In Illinois, before I retired, we registered each x-ray set that we had installed in the laboratory (as opposed to those we built for sale and were temporarily in house) and had periodic visits from the state authority to verify safe operation and record-keeping.  You may need to keep a calibrated radiation meter to check safe operation.

I refuse to use AD's LTspice or any other "free" software whose license agreement prohibits benchmarking it (which implies it's really bad) or publicly disclosing the existence of the agreement. Fortunately, I haven't agreed to that one, and those terms are public already.
