Fun: RGB LEDs for my bathroom
« on: September 25, 2011, 05:36:55 pm »
Hi,

I had for a couple of years, an old IKEA lamp in my bathroom. There is also another light on a wall, so this one was not really usefull. When i found on ebay and other sites some chineese vendors that propose cheap power RGB leds.. I thought, well, why not ?

I like the big polished glass diffuser on the lamp, perfect for enhencing rgb color mixing and making diffusing light.

First I wanted to do custom electronics, but when i found this:

http://www.goodluckbuy.com/30w-rgb-ip67-waterproof-led-light-driver-ac85v-265v.html

Well.. It's supplied with a remote, not expensive... I have a lot of other project's, so, well, this one toke about 15 minutes to be ready.

I waw planing to use 3x10W RGB LEDs, but one was defect, so it's actually working with two. A third will come, even if the actual power is more than enough :D

The result:

Quite easy, but fun ! It cost me about 25€ and just take a few minutes to assemble ^^

If RGB led lighting is the only light source you have in the room try this, its quite trippy.

Put 3 coloured objects on a bench in the room red, green, blue. Or you can just locate objects of these colours on shelves in the room. (Try to get/find objects as pure to their colour as you can, red object that looks like a pure red in normal light etc).

Now look at the objects and change your led lighting colour between red, green and blue.
You will notice that the objects turn from brightly coloured to completely black when you change the lighting colour away from their colour. :)

Is it bright enough to light the whole room when all the LEDs are on?

Do you have any other lighting in the room?

Have you considered adding a couple of extra white LEDs?

Even if it's bright enough, the colour rendering will be poorer from an RGB LED than a broad spectrum white LEDs.

The LED light is not the main light, it is just for decoration.

Yes, and the 6W of each color is plenty enough to light the whole room. The white is quite cold, but not bad at hall, can be used for normal lighting.
