Rare 1970s playart electronic Yellow Canary Toy
« on: July 24, 2023, 08:49:13 am »
rare 1970s playart electronic canary toy made in Hong Kong - "patent pending" see the back of the case.
2x 2SB187 SANYO germanium PNP transistors on the psb
currently its not working.  my assumption is bad electrolytic capacitors.
powered by a 9 volt battery.
currently reverse engineering the toy so I can repair it.
My questions
does anyone know anything about this playart yellow canary toy?  I find nothing about it online.
anyone know anything about were playart made its electronic toys in Hong Kong?
its value when working. & No its Not for sale.

What makes you think it's the capacitors? I doubt it.

Have you checked the connections to the battery and speaker?

The last time someon made a thread about this, it was the speaker which was faulty. This doesn't necessarily mean it's the case here.

Check transformers for continuity, and then suspect those Ge transistors, as they can get very leaky with time, especially as they likely were not exactly the best performers of the batch even when new, as toy products would often buy the lower cost poor performance transistors (exactly like Sinclair did) and test them all to see if they had low enough leakage to work here, and then use them, and replace if the gain was just too low.

I bet the circuit is similar to the one in the thread I linked to above. It will probably work with silicon PNP transistors.
