Removing conformant coating gel
« on: July 09, 2024, 09:46:39 am »
PCB I'm looking at is been submerged in this "yellowish" gel , to make it waterproof. I have managed to remove most of it, mechanically, but I do wonder if there are any more efficient ways to get rid of it. The whole PCB is still in a plastic tray -and if I want to remove it entirely and see the underside of it - I will have to use other means than mechanical. I do not want to destroy it, pretty much trying to hack a device and adopt it for my own needs.
It's a robotic lawnmower.

If it´s embedded in a tray and you do not want to destroy the tray then it gets really tricky.

I think you can't avoid minimal damage like drilling a hole into the plastic tray and pressing an injection needle between the gel and the tray. Then I´d fill a syringe with ethanol or WD40 and press the liquid into that material interface. In best case it delaminates the gel from the tray and you can lift it without further damage.

Of course, slight heating with a hairdryer to keep the gel as soft as possible can also help.

Every time you think you designed something foolproof, the universe catches up and designs a greater fool.
