How can I split these bins into 6 sections?
« on: December 23, 2013, 02:43:49 am »
I have one of these

For resistors, transistors, capacitors, I want to split each drawer into 6 sections.

How can I achieve this without a hot-glue mess?

You need to show us what the inside of a drawer looks like.
The day Al Gore was born there were 7,000 polar bears on Earth.
Today, only 26,000 remain.

Perhaps Ebay or Dealextreme have some small bins you can put inside the drawers.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

Usually those drawers can be divided with dividers(shocker  :o). I just checked mine, every drawer has three slots for dividers. So with three slots each side equals four compartments. Too bad mine didn't come with the actual dividers. If I wanted to add them I would probably get thin plexiglass and cut it to sizes, cardboard dividers would probably look really ugly.

What is a container like that called? I've been trying to get one like it but don't know what to search for.

Are the containers big enough to have 6 sections and still fit the components (and let you get them out)?

Cardboard + decent tape works. Or just use the divider slots if it has any.

Paper boxes.

Oh ... 6 paper boxes per bin, 64 bins, thats 384 paper boxes to fold. 5 minutes per box (est.). That makes 32 hours of box folding. If you don't die from boredom in between.

Mine has slots to put subdividers. I use old cut to size PCBs as subdividers.

5 minutes per box (est.).

Maybe for first two boxes. We improve with practice.
And you can always make each box when you need it.

Mine has a slot for one subdivider, but I need to subdivide more

IF the drawers had 90 degree corners (ie sides actually vertical, with no internal radius at the bottom) there is a way.
(But they probably are slanted, with radius corners.)
1. Cut a block of wood that's a press fit in the drawer, but about twice as high as the drawer.
2. Find some aluminium thin section L-shape extrusion, with the long side as high as you want your partitions, and the short side about 2cm.
3. Cut slots in the wood, that will hold the partitions. Press fits with the partitions, and all exactly the same depth of slot. Depth cut so the block rests on the partitions, while not itself reaching the bottom of the drawer.
4. Using some precision power saw, clamp and end stop, cut as many partitions as you'll need. (A lot!)
This is why it will only work if the drawer sides are vertical, with very minimal internal radius at corners.
Carpenter's drop saw with very sharp blade will work, so long as the aluminium piece has backing support right next to the cut.
5. For each drawer, press partitions into the wood block slots. Apply glue of choice to the bottoms of the partition L. Press the whole thing into the drawer, so the partitions get glued down. Good luck finding a glue that permanently sticks to that plastic and aluminuim.
6. Wait till glue sets, remove wood block.

Though personally, I think 6 sections per drawer is unworkable, unless you are planning to always use tweezers.
Oh, I suppose if it's for SMDs, tweezers it is then.

Much easier to use one draw full of small zip lock bags with your groups on components in them. The bags come in all sorts of dimensions.

e.g. 1.0x drawer for resistors with bags of 1,10,100,1k,10k,100k,1M inside.

Just write on the outside of each bag with a sharpie.
Not easy, not hard, just need to be incentivised.

I have bins like that with no dividers.  I took card stock and cut one to fit to use as a template. Then cut the rest out. Used hot glue to hold them in place.
Works for me.  I just need about 3k drawers

I found a nice way to organize everything.

I just used many, many bead boxes from home depot, they were on sale, 3 boxes for really cheap like 7 bucks, and I got like 15 boxes, 20 compartments each, and I have the entire e12 series of capacitors and resistors in boxes, and working on semiconductors.
