Customer's looking at putting a crimp type plug into a one of these:

If you're not familiar with the MTA-100 series, well... it's an IDC series only.  And IDC sucks...

The opening is the same size and shape as one of these,

except for those two blade protrusion things you can see in the picture.  Yeah, those are surely designed intentionally to prevent using anything other than MTA series plugs on these friggin' headers...

Semi-trivial solution: http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/harwin-inc/M20-1060600/952-2231-ND/3728195 something like this.  Unsuitable -- no locking tab/ramp.

It would be great to avoid changing the header on the board.

You might get away with it, I would certainly check any 3D models to see if you have adequate clearance. However, as the recommended crimp housing, 06P MTA100 CONN ASSY 30AU, TE Part No. 3-644020-6, relies on friction locks for it to stay in place then substituting a Harwin crimp housing might not be the best idea.
