1s to 2s lipo inside product.
« on: July 13, 2024, 09:46:57 pm »
I’ve been lurking around here for years.  First post.  Thanks for any comments/criticisms.

Designing a re placement rear cover for a product that increases battery life and is rechargeable.  The cover holds 2 UN certified “protected” 1s 2000mah lipo packs.  They plug into a series harness that leads to a balance 2s 15w charger.  From the charger is a standard 9 volt clip that leaves the case.  Does this now create an issue with the UN38.3 cert?  I’ve heard mixed opinions.  Pictures shows 1 of the prototypes.

You'll need to remember that your customers are always welcome to sue you if it burns down their property or injures anyone.

Yep absolutely lol.  That same liability has not stopped companies from selling products.  They follow the same rules that I am trying to follow.

So I’ve been doing some more research on this.  The seperate cells/modules have passed the required tests.  If I can verify that my assembly cannot overcharge, short circuit, or over discharge the batteries then everything should be fine with the original 38.3.  If I can’t verify that then the new assembly would need re tested under 38.3.3.1.

Any experts on the matter?

Since this is a proprietary product you're building, I would not expect people to do legwork regarding regulations & certifications for you for free. There may be people at the Underwriters Laboratory who can help you.

If you are mainly thinking of certifications, then an internet forum really is not the right place to get help. Regarding liability you need information that is liable for you - and that´s nothing you can get here.

Anyhow, I think this is a very constructive forum here, so let´s keep it that way: I know the US is not like Europe, but usually you find ways to bring a useful product to the people. Why don't you sell the housing design on a 3D-print-platform together with the BOM for the batteries and the charger? I´m no lawyer, I don't think this removes ALL responsibility from you but I assume it takes it to a reasonable level.

Of course, you can't earn big money that way. But there´s nothing like a free lunch...

I’m not asking for anyone to do any leg work on my behalf for free.  Just asking the experiences of others that have gone down this road.  If the answer was a clear “ that would need recerted” then I would already know how many I would need to build and about how much it would cost to send them off to a testing lab.  My whole this in this more to keep things in line for the product to be shipped easily.  Opening my business to liability is apart of business.

I definitely did think about selling the 3d printed cases with a BOB, but the focus is to sell plug and play solutions.

I appreciate the responses.  I’m still tweaking things and when the time is right I’ll reach out to the battery manufacturer for a response.
