Header pin strip to plug into IC socket ?
« on: July 10, 2012, 12:38:57 am »
I have a board with a 20 pin IC on it which needs to be replaced with another (not pin compatible) IC.

Designing the little adapter board is easy enough, but has anyone seen header pins that will plug into either a dual wipe or a machined pin IC socket?

Ideally something like the one below, but thinner (IC leg size) pins.

Ultimately I am making something like this (but with custom pinning):

BTW, this is not a 1-off requirement.  There are potentially 100's of boards to upgrade.

The SIL strips DO exist, I'm holding one. Measure 12mm 32W and fit perfectly into MC sockets.
I don't think you can get them any longer because the pins are thin, naturally. I have to run off to a job,
if you can't find them, I'll dig up where I bought them from. They were definitely EASY to find.

Yeah, it's all about knowing the right term to search for a lot of the time.

If you could check that would be fantastic.  Thanks.

You want a header that is 0.025" round or square on one side and 0.018" round on the other.

Mill-Max 351-10-1XX-00-009000, Samtec TS-1XX-T-A or similar.

The 0.018" diameter is the key thing - the common 0.025" will not fit in machined pin sockets and do bad things to spring contact sockets.

Thanks oPossum.  I was just looking through the Samtec range but hadn't found the exact part.

Somthing like this perhaps; http://www.digikey.nl/product-detail/en/9159-0-00-01-00-00-03-0/ED90578-ND/2639487
Or this kind of stamped contacts; http://batten-allen.com/sil-clip-design/

The round pins are interesting, but fiddly to place 20 on each small board.  The stamped ones would be neat for a SIL vertical board.

I believe what you want is called a "DIP Header". You didn't mention if this was SMD or through-hole, nor what spacing between rows (.3/.6"). In any event, I'm sure you could "build up" or "shave off" something to match from Jameco's selection (these are all through-hole):

http://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StoreCatalogDrillDownView?langId=-1&storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&freeText=dip%20header&search_type=jamecoall

This one has "skinny" pins 1 End, normal pins other end. The one I have has skinny pins both ends.

I'll check when I get back to the office

I'll get some of the Samtec ones to try.  Not cheap items, but not too bad in the scheme of things.

Yup, they're similar to what I have, skinny pins both ends. Harwin ones are cheaper.

Harwin ones are cheaper.

That's good to know.  Will have to track down a supplier for Harwin.
