Using a car battery charger to power Riden RD6006
« on: September 14, 2024, 09:59:27 pm »
I have this car battery charger: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B094VQ88X2

It outputs 10A @ 12V & 5A @ 24V

I'd like to use it to provide power to a Riden RD6006. https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2255800096237178.html

Is there a possibility this could damage the RD6006? I've read elsewhere about car chargers outputting "dirty" (I'm assuming that means inconsistent voltage or spikes?) dc that could damage devices that prefer a steady voltage.

Some of those "smart" chargers do not output constantly.  They switch the output on for a while, then turn it off and measure the battery voltage.  Then repeat.

Also the ones with a mode that claims to revive dead batteries usually apply voltage pulses significantly higher than 14 volts.

If you have a scope and suitable dummy load (eg a headlamp bulb) I would test before trying on the Riden.

Why on earth would you try to power a 360 W charger from a 120 W charger?

And I expect the charger will not start at all unless it senses external voltage (normally from the battery to be charged) on the charger's output terminals.

I have a similar one and it would not even start on a deep discharged battery.
All the “intelligence“ avert using it for anything other than charging.

Don't do it!!!! Those chargers are unpredictable, besides that the open circuit voltage could be insane, like up to 18VDC maybe more!

Bad news is that the charger really is no good power supply.

Good news is that power bricks that do better are really not expensive. With e.g. a 36V/10A supply like this

you get a really cheap and flexible power supply.

Just be prepared for lots of noise and some danger of something blowing up. I personally use such a combination as a Li-Ion charger from time to time, but never unsupervised. And I connected the (-) output of the mains supply to PE so that an insulation failure in the mains supply trips the RCD. I don't know if that´s possible in your application, but I recommend it if the output does not need to be floating.
