DAC and Amplifer
« on: April 26, 2016, 02:46:29 pm »
I am using a DAC PCM5102APWR whose output I am feeding to a TDA2050 amplifier. There is a lot of noise when i connect them directly. So, I am using a 1:1 Audio Isolator DA103MC in between them. The audio output is now with out noise but the sound quality is not good when i operate the system at high volume. I think the output is being clipped. I want the audio output to be less distorted. So, what should i do?

I have designed my circuit according to the reference design in data sheet. The TDA2050 is powered by single supply of 12V.

It wasn't distorting at high volume without the isolater? I'm not sure how that would affect output power unless the isolater is too small and rolling off the low frequencies. Is the problem that the low frequency response is reduced?

You can try increasing the gain of the amplifier if the DAC is clipping. Might want to try a couple of different input sources to rule out the DAC.

If the amplifier is clipping switch to a higher voltage power supply. With a 12v supply you aren't going to get that much power out of it. Try going to 24 or even more, but make sure your power decoupling caps are rated for the voltage.

The digital transformer is of no use for audio signals, use a low-pass filter between the DAC and the amplifier instead to remove high-frequency noise.

It was distorting at high volume without the isolater but not as much when i connected the isolator. I am using an audio transformer DA130MC it is supposed to only pass audio signals and isolate the digital and analog part to remove noise
