LiPo Batteries - Mechanical strain considerations
« on: October 12, 2020, 01:17:47 pm »
Hi everyone,

I am desing an insole and I am going to integrate a LiPo battery to supply a PCB. The LiPo and PCB will mounded at the inner of the insole. I am wondering if LiPo batteries is suitable for this kind of application.. I mean could they withstand the body load, friction etc. I am going to install it under the instep flap. I cannot find any information regarding mechanical strain in the datasheets..

Do you have any experience with that?

Nick

Mechanical strain is part of what caused Samsung to have to spend $5 billion to recall the Galaxy Note 7.

I wouldn't entertain any design that didn't completely, 100%, redundantly, rigidly protect the battery from any kind of forces whatsoever. It's not worth the risk.

Besides the whole liability mess of such a thing (and you've stepped in quite a biggie), I'd start by looking at multiple small cells encased in stainless steel enclosures. Strong and small enough to stop or divert a nail when jammed in with 2kN. Engineer from there.

LiPo can bulge so consider that into your design...
